When I changed my status a roommate of mine said she liked it. Then, one of our good guy friends responded with "I will fight the both of you." I know this was a sarcastic comment; we could analyze it and say its male ego and he wants to prove he could beat two girls at once. But, I really know the comments I got were sarcastic. Kickboxing really isn't that weird of an activity for girls to participate in these days. I think the guys in the class definitely had the harder status to put up. Those responses would be interesting. The rest of my posts were basically witty banter between my roommate and our friend. The only other interesting thing was a post from my friend saying:

You must learn from this man to be a great fighter.

I don't know if I get these responses because people know I'm a sarcastic person or because no one found my status weird in any way. Either way, I got a good laugh out of the video.

I got a good laugh out of the video as well. I definitely think that one comment shows that boys sometimes still think they can automatically beat girls in athletic competitions. Even when I watch college sports with guys, they sometimes think they can beat all the female college girls in basketball, soccer, tennis, you name it.

I agree, there is a lot of sarcasm involved. But at the end I think most people think that it's weird that girls like kickboxing.

It would be interesting to see if there is a boundary line for girls being involved in male activities. Does it ever stop being cool and start feeling like girls shouldn't be participating in all the same things men do?

It's true. I think there could have been a better thing for girls to post instead of kickboxing to be controversial. Like construction jobs or a Halo tournament or wrestling.

Why do you have to learn from a man to be a great fighter? Maybe men are the current experts because women have not been involved in "fighting" nearly as long. Think of women fighting in the past 50 years as opposed to men being involved for thousands of years. Perhaps in the future women can become the go-to experts on how to be a real fighter.

I agree completely. The boys definitely had a more responsive question to put forth. I didn't really get much of a response and the people who did respond were really supportive and even wanted to come with me.

i can relate to people knowing you as a pretty sarcastic person. your friends either took your status as sarcastic or just another crazy idea. ha, not sorry you're crazy.

I agree, the kickboxing was not particularly crossing gender codes for me either. If I said I'd gotten a job roofing, there would have been a different reaction.
