My status did not elicit any surprised responses or questions to me regarding why I have a desire to start kickboxing. It is not uncommon for women to do activities that are generally more directed at men. I do have friends that are girls who are boxers, so it is common enough that it does not shock people. It was interesting thought that one of my friends assumed that I made my status about kickboxing because I must be upset at a guy. His comment was, “Some boy gone and ticked you off huh…fool don’t even know he in danger.” When girls say that they like more male-oriented activities, it often gives the impression that she wants to be tough and powerful too. She does not want to be over-looked or stepped on. She is equal and capable with keeping up with the guys.
In general, the responses that I received made it seem that people, especially men, do not think it is strange for women to start kickboxing. In fact, most of them thought it was cool. The guys mostly responded by just saying they liked it and girls gave motivating “girl-power” comments, such as “oh yeah, a woman that can Kickbox! You Go!!”

I got the same basic responses. There is definitely this idea that it is important to support girls in their endeavor to gain more power through participating in male-oriented activities.
