Ok, so my status did not elicit a lot of comments. I don't think girls kickboxing is that big of deal now so perhaps people didn't feel the need to comment. My aunt is my biggest supporter of doing ANYTHING outside of gender norms (like riding motorcycles and playing sports with the boys) so I knew she would comment..."Beautiful and Dangerous." Good old grandpa though would like me to stick to a more tame form of excercise. Although I think golf would be more male dominated, he liked it better than kickboxing! All in all, I don't think that anyone would look down to a girl excercising with kickboxing because it is quite common today. There are female kickboxing instructors at the gym and it is not a big deal!

I think it says a lot about our generation that kickboxing is more acceptable. I definitely think in the 40s and 50s the gender codes were more rigid, and it is more difficult for the older generation to break them. I think that shows from your grandfather's comment that he would prefer a more gentle, feminine activity.

I think it's funny that your aunt was all for a female empowerment activity while your grandpa wanted you to stick to something less aggressive. It kinda illustrates the idea that women are more for breaking gender codes then men are
