Gender Codes

When I updated my status to say that I was excited to start my sewing class next week, I was not very surprised by the responses I got. Those who know me best know that:
       A. I would never take a sewing class
       B. I would not have the patience for it.
       C. I am not secure enough in my manhood to post to the world that I am taking a sewing class.

Here are some of the responses I got.

so what does this all mean to you?

I think it's funny that someone who knows you (I assume they do because they have the same last name as you) thought it was really odd.

it almost still doesn't seem that terribly bad for a guy to sew

I agree that's it's not too weird if a guy sews - I know a few guys who sew... if they own it, it's not a huge deal

K I loved the responses you got! When I put up kickboxing I barely got anything! You got a ton! Girls roles are so much more flexible thank heavens.

Definitively men don't get the luxury of exploring and performing other activities that might be more "feminine."

I love how people just flat out didn't believe you. Its crazy how much our gender roles become part of our identity.

"real men sew" = comfortable with sexuality and pursue activities of interest. doesn't seem negative to me.

I think it is hilarious some thought your facebook had been hacked simply because you said you were going to start sewing. I think most guys are in the same boat as you with those same reasons.

I think it's interesting how the men defended sewing while the girls automatically questioned it.
