Gender Codes: Cameron Pinegar

I thought the comments I received were not very revealing. For one, only two people commented on my post. I feel like your status in the facebook world becomes less important after you get married. One person, a male, said, "I started sewing a few months ago, it's awesome, I've already made my own pajama pants." In my opinion this comment, as well as the lack of comments, show me that it's not that odd for a man to sew these days. I mean, men do not typically sew, but sewing is not a real head-turner. I believe people who would see my facebook status know I am hetero-sexual and they are not questioning my sexuality when I post a status, so it doesn't really elicit a response, even if the status goes against gender code. When I was in high school it was actually cool for guys to take the sewing class. There were lots of girls in the class and it was a good way to meet girls and impress them. I just don't think that sewing is that weird for a guy. The other comment read, "good for you cam." This comment was posted by my aunt who loves to sew. Again, the comment didn't really teach me much. My aunt obviously does not believe it's weird that I start sewing. If someone close to me in my family is not biting on my odd gender code post then I think it's pretty safe to say that gender codes are being broken down more and more in our society.

Perhaps in our Mormon culture it is more acceptable for a man to sew. All my nonmember friends deemed it "gay."

I wonder if it would be different a couple months ago before you were married??! I'd guess YES.

I agree that people that know you are more willing to be acceptable of you trying other things.
