Kickboxing
I posted to twitter, and I only got two responses. One was from my friend (girl) that said, "maybe you'll be able to beat me in arm wrestling now." Which is pretty unlikely even if I was actually taking kickboxing, and then I got a response from a guy friend simply calling me a "weakling." My post did not elicit any controversial comments. I think that kickboxing isn't really that out of the norm for a girl and therefore it pretty accepted as a workout for either sex. I guess my guy friend did express his concern that I would be too weak to kickbox, but it was more likely that he was just teasing because it is out of my character to take up such a sport.

i say don't let your friend call you weak. you should really take kickboxing classes then use it on him because he called you that! girl power!
I agree that nowadays kickboxing has become more available and regular for women. The kickboxing classes at most gym are basically female oriented.
It's funny that most guys who commented said something like "weakling" or "I could still beat you up". It's like even though you are going to be taking up something kind of manly, they still have to prove they are more of a man than you.
Girls that kickbox are usually the ones that are into sports and go to the gym.
that's interesting that they made comments about your lack of strength in both comments, almost assuming that you are taking it because you are weak and need to feel more physically strong.
