Gender Shmender

Well I did it, I posted "I'm taking up kick-boxing" as my Facebook status and guess what?

a big....

fat...

Nothing.

Nobody cares!

And why should they? In today's world, it's actually sexy for a woman to do something that men traditionally would have had the monopoly on... plus, I know tons of girls who do kickboxing, it's not even that exclusively male anymore.

We sort of talked about this in class, but women have much more flexibility with gender roles than men do right now. If a guy took up crocheting and wore makeup... he'd be a wee bit on the gender-confused side. But a woman who fixes your car AND looks good in heels? Now that's awesome. I think of all those chicks in bikinis on a motorcycle, a good mixture of feminine and masculine, and yet they're the two-page spread in magazines for men. A guy in a tutu? Not so much. (Although I am the first to admit that Mikhail Baryshnikov is the most attractive man to have ever walked this planet. He is plenty manly.)

In many senses, the women's liberation movement gave women more freedoms than men will ever have-- there are so many different kinds of women, but it's still hard to be a man in capris in the U.S.

I think people should be excited about a woman empowering herself! Unfortunately, a lot of people don't care. Disappointing.

I enjoyed reading your analysis and I agree completely. It has turned almost attractive in a man's eyes for women to be good at something he likes to do. Get a boy who loves soccer, and a pretty girl who can kick his butt at it...you have one love sick puppy.

I agree with your post completely! Women can do almost anything now.

I actually have guy friends that are surprised if a girl doesn't participate in any type of manly activity.

men love images of megan fox fixing cars and motor cycles in the transformer movies. as a woman, if i saw an image of a man who was painting a girls toenails i would think that was nice of him. however, i would also think it was weird. i think woman do have more flexibility with what they want to pursue, but i don't think it is absolute.

My first question was, "Why isnt there more variety of men?" Women spent a lot of time fighting for gender rights to be involved in men's activities. Maybe there are more varieties of women because we fought for womens rights. Going with that thought, the men coming out of the closet about being gay are the revolutionaries who fight for acceptance of their interests. The timeline of men engaging in women activities is much shorter and not as well-established. Maybe after 50 years, the metrosexual will disappear.

There is totally that social construct that women can still be female while doing male activities. It's just our views in this day and age. Too bad guys can't pull off the same thing.

i think that its true that women have more freedom with what they do than men in the sense that the wont be judged.

I agree with your assessment of female freedom in gender roles. I think feminism has done a lot to show that we can do anything we want to. I don't know how I'd react to a blatant movement promoting men as domestic alternatives to women though.

I definitely agree we should have posted something more bizarre for a girl.
