My Temporary Boxing Career
Although I couldn't use my round-house kick or my hook, jab, and cross, I found the few comments on Facebook very entertaining. I got five male responses and one female response, who just replied, "Awesome!" Two males thought it was cool: " U should Em wants me to teach her a little to" or "your on! I get to be your first victim...I mean opponent." Surprisingly, they were very supportive and excited for me! I think this was like what we talked about in class. Women have a little bit of leeway to engage in "manly" events, compared to men engaging in "womanly" events. There was one male, however, who replied, "Uh-Oh!" which can only mean one thing. He must have felt nervous and hesitant about my experimental decision. I wish I had received more comments to reflect on, but unfortunately this is what I had to work with.

I got the same type of comments. I think that boys think it's sexy!!!
I don't think it surprises people when girls enjoy activities that are more male dominated.
Maybe men are accepting of women participating in kickboxing because they dont feel we are a threat to that sport. They might feel we engage in kickboxing just for the cardio workout rather than as a strength-building exercise or as self-defense.
I think it says a little bit about the guy when they are really supportive. I know my dad thinks it's a really good idea, like it will provide protection.
I think the guy who commented saying "uh-oh" could have meant you are now dangerous! That's a reaction one of my friends had! Not that I'd feel particularly dangerous to anyone regardless of my hypothetical kickboxing experience...
It totally seems that in today's culture it is attractive for a woman to try out a man's activity.
