World Series

Why do they call it the world series if it only involves american baseball clubs?

No one responded... that's because I'm married now and when you get married even your facebook friends disappear. But, I have a good opinion on this subject and because no one else gave me their opinion I'm going to put mine forward to you so you can gloss over it and make funny forced remarks about it. Here it is: MLB can call it the world series because (1) baseball started here and (2) the best of the best players from around the world come here to play for a club making it a very diverse league.

The most trusty college student source (wikipedia) says the world series name evolved from the "The Championship of the United States" to "World's Championship Series", and then to the "World's Series" for short. Obviously the name is simply an evolved form of an original title that caught hold and has stuck. Tradition.... tradition... as my friend fiddling on the roof would say. There is nothing wrong with tradition and this American tradition started before the sport really caught on anywhere else. Other countries complaining about us calling it the world series would be the equivalent of us going to Europe and asking why is your football league called the Champions league? The real champions of football are the men who win the super bowl.

We could drop the argument here but it is worth reiterating that the MLB is the best league in the world! Anyone who is highly skilled will be payed high amounts of money to play on a team and make that team winners. These days it doesn't matter where that player is from. That is why the league attracts men from Japan, Latin America, the Caribbean etc. to play for a chance and winning the world series. So people, let's drop the argument. It's the world series... the name ain't going away so just embrace it's wonderful roots and enjoy living in america where you can watch such high quality baseball.

I know this is going to sound hard to believe, but not very many people care to watch high "quality" baseball. don't get me wrong, I like baseball, I could careless who wins the world series. I think its still rather ethnocentric for us to believe that it actually represents the best players in all the world. however it is a great name. and to equate that with saying europe has no right to call their football tournament the Championship, then you really haven't been outside of the U.S. Football is huge everywhere but here. I think the fact is because we're (U.S.) isn't that good, so we don't want to focus on something that might damage our fragile ego. And thats the way it is. And trust me the superbowl doesn't compare to World cup. We believe its important because our media says it is.

Once I went to a Salt Lake Bee's game (because it was the 4th of July and they had fireworks) But other than that... baseball is definitely not on my radar.
