My post didn't get any replies... probably because most of my friends aren't sports fanatics. So I talked to my wife about it. I mentioned how the article I had read poked fun at cheerleading and also mentioned how women's sports don't get much advertising because they don't bring in a huge audience due to its lack of sex appeal. She then mentioned Volleyball!
Female volleyball answers the question. It does have a large fan base and gets a lot of sponsors. Why? Well, it does take a lot of skill and the athletes are really good, but they also compete in bikinis. Another sport that was brought up was Gymnastics. Again takes a lot of practice, but the uniform is revealing. Ice skating... same thing. Oh and we can't forget tennis! Most of these sports have had some great female athletes who have then gone on to sell all sorts of merchandise, including their bodies in magazines, calendars and posters.
Are they taken seriously... maybe, but not sure if there are a lot of male fans that just notice them for their athletic abilities.
Now I wonder is the whole fad with fitness sports games suppose to appeal to women or men?
