I first asked my facebook friends what they thought about the idea of the church discontinuing athletics at BYU. Most of my friends who commented don't go to BYU and actually thought it would be a great idea. Two friends do feel it would take away from the unity of campus and the college experience. Most made a reference to the money aspect, whether it is taking away scholarships or losing money from no ticket sales.
I then asked if there should be more sex appeal in womens sports and one girl said "no, it takes away from women who are already looked at as less superior to male athletes. we need to see their skill and talent, not cleavage!" One friend doesn't see how sex appeal has anything to do with sponsorship of sports and another made a remark about how the WNBA already does since lesbians attend the games.
I think the responses I got were representative of the fact that most of my friends either arent big sports fans or just don't like BYU. I guess it does really come down to money. Yeah, we like sports here and enjoy the experience but what it comes down to is the money that is generated.
