Sports are here to stay

So I chose the question, "how much would you love/hate it if BYU got rid of its sports teams." The response was shockingly immediate and aggressive. Poorly punctuated outbursts threatened exile from BYU among other things. Eventually the posts softened into a bewildered denial that such an idea as getting rid of sports teams could exist. Finally a dialogue began of whether or not all the money and attention given to sports is merited. Posters came to more or less of a conclusion that because sports bring so much money into the university they are a necessary evil and deserve even more funds and recognition.
