World Series Woes

I posted the following question on my facebook status: "Why is it called the World Series? It is not a national event..." I did not get many responses to it. I think this may have been because some people could have taken the context of the question to be rhetorical or comedic. But I really meant it as a genuine question. Someone responded with the comment, "I have been saying this for years."

Someone else responded with the same suggestion I had as to why it is called the World Series. He suggested that it was because all the best players in the world play baseball in America, but he admitted he wasn't sure and really had no idea where the series got its title. The other responses were superfluous to the question. I expected someone to respond suggesting America thinks very highly of itself, or something to that effect, but no one did.
