Excuses

Here were their responses to the question posted on my facebook

do you think everybody's a little bit racist?

"I know a musical who does."
"YES"
"No, but everyone has some (probably unfair) prejudice.
"uh... NO, what in the world ever make u think that?"
"No. But people definitely use that as an excuse."
"In some cultures."

4/6 that responded were from the San Francisco Bay Area and what I knew about each person that responded seemed to correspond with their responses well.
Two of the friends that responded No were both people that I had gone to high school with. Our highschool was pretty diverse, white almost being the minority. While there were some racial divisions, our high school was pretty unique in that bullying and cliques were minimal and there was a lot of cross-cultural interaction. They both also attend UC Berkeley and aren't white. I can understand how they wouldn't agree racism isn't acceptable.

It was interesting, the responses came in relatively quick but after my friend posted that people used it as an excuse responses stopped. In fact a friend told me she was going to respond until she saw that comment. This friend just went the South Africa where racism is a very big issue and people are very upfront on it. Having come from there, she did believe everyone was a little bit racist.

The guy that said YES! was also someone from my highschool. He's a black male, attends a four year university and performs as a rap artist. I wonder if the other two from my school had more of a No answer because of the fact that I can see them being able to fit in in 'white culture' better than my rap artist friend can.

wow- talk about diversity. My comments all came from my white friends back home. It's cool that you were able to make those inferences based off of the people's experiences and location.

I noticed the same trend. I do think the individual's responses had a lot to do with where they were raised and the amount of diversity they were exposed to.

I think people use it as an excuse to say what they want too. I think everyone is a little bit racist, but I don't think we should use it as an excuse to say what we want. We should constantly be trying to find ways to understand other races and remove biases and stereotypes.

It is really related to the race of who is responding. A response from a white person will be very different to the response from somebody who is from another race. There is always more sensitivity on the minority's side.

I find the responses you got to be the most unique and interesting. I don't understand why people would stop responding after the excuse comment? Having lived in different states I could always see the racism of different races.
