Do you think everyone is a little bit racist?

I didn’t receive many responses after I posted this status. However, I got a few replies that said ‘Yes’ to the post. One of the posts also agreed and added “Avenue Q.” It is a musical in which there’s a song called “Everyone is a little bit racist”—which it’s the same one from the video that we watched in class. I think that this type of topics raise a lot of questions because I believe that everyone has their own reasons from disagreeing or agreeing. Most of the people that posted ‘Yes’ are currently living in foreign countries—which I believe can influence their responses. As an international student living in a foreign country I can understand why someone in the same position could think that everyone is a little bit racist. However, I don’t think it’s fair to stereotype everyone in the same category. On the other hand, people create their own set of conceptions and rules based on their own life experiences. I would say that those that agreed with the post have seen or experienced some type of racism in their lives. I didn’t receive any posts that replied ‘No.’

I got the Avenue Q post as well. I wasn't sure what that meant. Thanks for clarifying.

I got the same Avenue Q post too! I think that stereotypes are very powerful... something that is now just a part of our thought process from the media mainly. It helps our brains to be able to analyze and judge something quickly.

Its interesting to see how some people who are exposed to other races become a little more racist. I think its because they see things they dont agree with and stereotype the situation. Sometimes exposure is not the best but overall I do think exposure is needed.

I think some barriers can be broken down when exposed to other cultures or our stereotypes can be confirmed in our own mind.

I had hoped someone would have made a reference to Avenue Q.
