Media comments - Summer Holm

I decided to do the -only checking email twice option. After doing this on Thursday I realized that I'm more of an addict than i realized. There were two distinct times when i had to catch myself because i almost checked my email out of habit. I realized that i had a media routine every time I opened my computer. And my routine takes about 5 minutes before I even get started on what i set out to do when i opened my laptop up in the first place.

When I posted a status asking " are you addicted to the media?" Most of the comments i received were people making jokes about their "addiction" or habit. Which made me realize that even though we all know we have high media usage tendencies, we make ourselves feel less guilty by joking about it. The most interesting comment said "yes. what else would we do with our spare time?"

I asked my 75 year-old grandparents what they thought about that comment and they said that once upon a time there was no "spare time." They filled their day with crazy things like working or spending time with family. So where did we get all this "spare time?" Did we create it or did the media create it?

a media routine is something that i had never thought about but I would agree, everytime I get onto the computer i find myself checking one of five sites; gmail, facebook, yahoo news, google, and youtube.
